All Roads Lead to Rome
For seven days, Morgan stayed on station in Berlin.
Soaring above ancient alleys and huge boulevards, flitting between the suburbs and the city center, alternating between the dhimmi districts and the Muslim zones, he served as both witness and guide.
He called down fire on Janissaries, policemen, Guardsmen. He watched police stations, Guards bunkers, gun emplacements dissolve in fire. He inspected garages and parking facilities for hidden armored vehicles and guided in impactors to wipe them out. He slipped inside mosques to spy on military meetings, penetrated hospitals to track down wounded government officials, sneaked into schools and mansions to track VIPs, then guided Spec Ops teams to their targets.
All around him, the city burned. The Germans were relentless, going street to street, house to house, systematically clearing, taking and holding every building and every crossroad. The Berlin Resistance chipped in, triggering a general revolt in the dhimmi neighborhoods, pinning the Janissaries and the police. Air raid sirens wailed day and night, every hour fresh plumes of smoke and flame clawed at the heavens. Drones buzzed constantly over the city, watching every square inch of Berlin, loosing missiles and bombs and lasers. Now and then a Caliphate laser or a missile or an anti-drone shell plucked one from the sky; three more appeared to replace it, and Morgan went hunting for the hunters.
He gave himself over to the madness of the war. He was a chooser of the slain, and everywhere he went, death and madness followed in his wake. The soundtrack of war accompanied him, a devilâs symphony of machinegun fire, bomb blasts, railgun screams, the wails of men and women and children suffering and dying. Everywhere he looked, streams of souls began the lonely ascent to the heavens; even more tried and failed, sinking back to the earth.
Day and night smeared into an unending blur. In the real world, Knight relayed a never-ending current of fresh orders; in the astral, Morgan fed her a ceaseless torrent of information and data; both streams feeding into each other in an endless, ever-growing loop.
In Lichtenberg he saw panzers roll down the streets, accompanied by cheering civilians and escorted by an honor guard of blood-caked partisans. In the neighboring district, medics and surgeons treated combatants and civilians alike in a makeshift field hospital, indifferent to race, uniform or language. Just down the road, a battalion of panzergrenadiers dueled with another battalion of dug-in Janissaries, with Morgan betraying the Janissariesâ every move and calling down artillery barrages on their positions. The Alliance, led by the Germans, ground ever forward, earning every inch in blood and fire.
Morgan didnât encounter any more hostile psis, but heâd heard his Polish counterparts complaining about them.
When he wasnât on duty, he bent every fiber of his being towards the needs of war. He hit the gym hard, to discipline mind and body and spirit. He ate and drank in conformance with a strict diet, to maintain his fleshly vessel. He practiced combatives and combat shooting, in case Caliphate commandos raided the base.
